Master of Science
There are many educational opportunities available through the Program in Narrative Medicine. We offer a Master’s of Science in Narrative Medicine, which can be completed in 1 year. We are currently in the process of developing a low-residency certification program.
Courses for Medical Students
Medical Students at Columbia’s College of Physician and Surgeons are required to take a narrative medicine seminar during their first year of medical school, and have the option to take a narrative medicine elective during their fourth year of school. Narrative Medicine is available as one of six research tracks available to P & S students for scholarly projects.
Interprofessional Education at Columbia
The Program in Narrative Medicine is part of an interdisciplinary initiative across professional schools, and offers a narrative-medicine based interdisciplinary seminar between the School of Nursing, Dental Medicine, Physician and Surgeons, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition, and Chaplaincy. Previously funded by the Macy Foundation and termed Macy Seminars, in 2016 this initiative was renamed Columbia Commons for IPE: Collaboration Across Professions.
