Shoshana Ungerleider and Jessica Nutik Zitter

For our April Rounds, we welcome Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider and Dr. Jessica Nutik Zitter, two of the key clinicians involved in Extremis, a verité documentary exploring the harrowing decisions that doctors, families and patients face in urgent end-of- life cases. With access to the intensive care unit of a public hospital, the film offers a uniquely intimate look at the intersection of science, faith and humanity.
Shoshana Ungerleider, MD is an internist practicing hospital medicine in San Francisco, California. She received her medical degree from Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR and completed residency at California Pacific Medical Center where she is now on the teaching faculty and serves on the Foundation Board of Trustees. Dr. Ungerleider ii s passionate about improving how seriously ill patients are cared for throughout the continuum of life. She founded the Ungerleider Palliative Care Education Fund to support innovative programs that further palliative care education at every level and was a major funder of Extremis, the Academy Award nominated short documentary on end-of-life decision making in the ICU.
Jessica Zitter, MD, MPH, practices ICU and Palliative Care at the county hospital in Oakland, California. She is the author
ofExtreme Measures: Finding a Better Path to the End of Life.Her essays and articles have appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Huffington Post, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and other publications. Her work is featured in an Oscar-nominated short documentary, Extremis, now streaming on Netflix. She regularly lectures and speaks on the radio on the topic of dying in America.
