Master of Science
There are many educational opportunities available through the Division of Narrative Medicine. We offer a Master’s of Science in Narrative Medicine, which can be completed in 1 year. We are currently in the process of developing a low-residency certification program.
Courses for Medical Students
Medical Students at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons are required to take a narrative medicine seminar during their first year of medical school, and have the option to take a narrative medicine elective during their fourth year of school. Narrative Medicine is available as one of six research tracks available to VP&S students for scholarly projects.
Interprofessional Education at Columbia
The Division of Narrative Medicine is part of an interdisciplinary initiative across professional schools, and offers a narrative-medicine based interdisciplinary seminar with dental, medical, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, pastoral care, physical therapy, public health and social work students. Previously funded by the Macy Foundation and termed Macy Seminars, in 2016 this initiative was renamed Columbia Commons for IPE: Collaboration Across Professions.

Columbia Narrative Medicine continues to expand its own scope of academic and clinical interests and welcomes scholars whose work aligns with our own current foci related to social justice, moral injury, and burnout in healthcare.
