For this workshop, the Narrative Medicine faculty at Columbia will be joined by a guest faculty of scholars and artists committed to addressing racial disparities in health, safeguarding lives of young Black Americans, and representing in film and poetry the states of affairs and the possibilities for a future of equality. We are joined by George Yancy, author of Black Bodies, White Gazes: The Continuing Significance of Race and Look, A White! Philosophical Essays on Whiteness, community psychiatrist and activist Mindy Fullilove, author of Urban Alchemy, and medical doctor, professor of narrative medicine and health advocacy, and writer Sayantani DasGupta, author of Globalization and Transnational Surrogacy in India, and Topher Sanders, award-winning investigative journalist, author of recent NY Times opinion piece “Only White People, said the little girl," who covers race inequality for Pro Publica.

Basic Narrative Medicine Workshop

This Basic Workshop provides an intensive immersion in the methods and skills of narrative medicine. These practices are then applicable to almost unlimited clinical and non-clinical settings and goals. From Friday at 2 pm to Sunday at 5 pm, participants gather for plenary presentations by the founders of the Program in Narrative Medicine alternating with small-group seminars. You and seven other participants will form a small group that stays together for the entire weekend, while faculty facilitators rotate through the groups. The large presentations by faculty open up themes of how stories work, creativity, ethics, bearing witness, and empathy, while the small groups practice rigorous skills in close reading, creative writing, and responding to the writings of others.
